When I was growing up I was taught that sex should be saved for marriage. There was a lot of guilt put on us girls in particular about being sexually active outside of the marriage bed. My parents countered this to a small degree by modifying the belief to "you only have sex with someone you truly love." The outcome for me was I imagined myself to be in love with everyone I had sex with which resulted in me feeling hurt when no relationship resulted from a sexual encounter. I also felt incredibly guilty about this because I thought had I remained a "good girl" the guy might have treated me differently. I married young, probably so I could have my sexual needs met. Separation from my husband did not bring liberation, I ended up in another relationship within 12 months. I should say that in the long term relationships I have had, my partners were quite experimental and I have enjoyed sex totally. I think that tertiary study helped me to see the Catholic indoctrination for what it was and what it created within my psyche in regards to sexuality. Despite this recognition at a cognitive level, it has been hard to separate sex from love and even now I find I have the best sex when there is an emotional connection and a high level of trust, which usually comes after getting to know someone reasonably well. Its only been in the last 6 years that I have discovered my capacity for guilt free sex. There are aspects of sexual behaviour that I have not tried but am curious about and while I can't be certain, my religious indoctrination could certainly have contributed to my reluctance to fully give myself over to the fulfilment of my fantasies. I pity those of generations before us where unmarried mothers were outcast and so called illegitimate children were referred to as bastards. There really was a lot of pressure to conform. This is still taking place in other cultures where straying women are victimised rather than being treated equal to the participating male, who gets away with almost anything. Stories of family organised murder of a straying daughter is often carried by the media, stoning of alleged adulterous women, even if they have been raped. Many cultures treat westerners as decadent... and this may be true in some cases. But would prefer an open mind to the rigidity of the above mentioned cultures who do terrible things to protect the status quo. Often these cultural beliefs are reinforced by religious dogma. So if the mind set of the religion is still back in the middle ages... then resistance to change will continue to be strong as will opposition to new ideas about equality and a fair go. Can you imagine what would happen to the RHP folk if we lived there? I'm sure we would all be stoned.

All 'priests' no matter the 'religion' make up their own rules as the go to suit the times. Some are worse than others and all are in it to feed off the people who support them. Thru the ages look at the wars and pain the 'church' metered out to the people. Most religions should hang their heads in shame at the suiffering they have and continue to cause. Priests are men or women just like you and me and are all capable of the same feelings we all have. Some are bad eggs hiding behind the veil of it. Luckily I have never been poisoned by religion. How liberating it is to sample the forbidden fruit. To break away from the constraints others impose on us. How many have missed out on valuable life experiences because of some inhibition? Women who have married young to then find everything is not a bed of roses. But years later find that freedom when the chains that bind them are gone. Others never get the courage to explore... fearing the unknown. How wonderful it would be to have the freedom to experience the widest range of sexual adventures without guilt or adverse consequences. As long as what we do does not impact adversely on others... and one remains cognisant of their own well being. But then what we wish for and what we get is not always the same... as then expect the country would be full of Lotto winners :)

I was brought up a Catholic and my family was always pretty tight mouthed when it came to sex. When I was a kid some of the folks always grossed out by kisses on TV and made out it was wrong. Sometimes they say they are open minded about but any tv show that has sex scenes they go all quiet you can tell they are uncomfortable with it. And when I comment about any sexual issue or even a girl I like they go all funny, I notivced the change in their behaviour. So I've been kind of suppressed and hope that won't affect my intimacy. I'm an Atheist now so das all in the past.

For Some reason my post didn't get published. I was brought up catholic and was too taught that sex is wrong. Well, even the granny made out to me that kissing was wrong. Whenever there was kissing on tely she got grossed out and encouraged me too as well. It is sooo repressive. Even now anything to do with sex even on tv some folks behaviour would change. They go all funny like, as if it's all wrong.

You are not often wrong... but you are right again... I did have you fondly in mind when I started this topic. I have friends who are thoroughly screwed up by these issues... and one became an alcoholic over it before his demise from cancer. As I said earlier, "As long as what we do... does not impact adversely on others... and one remains cognisant of their own well being. " it's really no one else's business. Probably why we use the terms 'naughty' and 'bad' to describe people who are not backward in coming forward regarding sex. It's a throw back to antiquated values that were impressed upon us.

The pompous way some priests act as if they are greater than thou whilst dressed up in garb from another time and era. Fortunately some have made an effort to represent our century. At least they now speak english. If Mad Max had his way they would still be confounding us with latin. Remember going to a christening of a friends... to then be ear bashed by the priest on the evil use contraceptives and accusing us all of being abortionists. What a presumption just because we were not from his parish or of his faith. We were collectively insulted by his outburst... to which the father of the child gave him a thorough ear bashing too... never to return to that church again... even though it was located just around the corner from them.

Must agree... You could see them cringe. The worst part was not mentioning sex to their offspring. If sons and daughters relied on their parents guidance... they would only discover sex by accident once married. Its remarkable the human race survived. :)

I was raised to be pretty open minded. My wife however was not... she was raised in a strict catholic house (gee sounds like we are bagging out only the catholics..) to the point where we first had sex just 6 weeks before our wedding (and that was after knowing each other for 5 years). Her view on sex was always very very vanilla and standard... things such as oral sex were a massive no no. It led me to be uncomfortable in discussing what I wanted and needed with her as I was concerned I would offend.. then later in the marriage I was ok to discuss it but she clammed up when we did... so I could see it was uncomfortable for her to talk and therefore dropped it... Yes - this type of thing can have a very real and negative impact on a relationship. It's "power" is not to be underestimated in the slightest. It's something I am so much more aware of now and the ability to talk without fear of clamming up is refreshing indeed. Wayne PS - nice topic mate - well done.

Its sad really when a perfectly lovely human being can be sexually ruined in this manner. A life of fulfilment is robbed from her, and her partner, often by people who are sworn to celibacy, or have abused their position and contradicted their teachings with their improper dealings with children. How crazy is that? How can they be the font of all wisdom with out the experience and whilst in total denial of sexual feelings and reality? Its got me stuffed ?????

You have a valid point that the discussion could deteriorate, which would be most unfortunate. But hopefully the RHP fraternity have open minds and hearts with regard to these important issues. Issues which are often suppressed as much as the desires of the millions of souls who remained unfulfilled sexually, going back the last 2,000 years of Christianity. I'm not against the fundamental teachings of Christ, just the distortions men have introduced over the ages. Most keen to discover how such guilt has effected the lives of people here and how they resolved the problem? Also keen to learn of the solutions people have evolved.

whether it is religion or politics, they both pronounce a holier than than though rules to live by, and make so many in society feel guilty because we don’t match up. (and in most cases they do not adhere to the rules anyway) Let’s turn everything upside down, hedonistic values rule. The tabloids will go bankrupt though. When I was 13 I saw Logans Run and it started me questioning who makes the rules to live by and, why they change with time. I hope I live to be 500 then society and I might align, others might have to wait a little longer. dzynr

I read somewhere that religion was re born in its current form to control the masses. Clever ploy on behalf of our ancestors as it appears to have worked to a large degree. I'm wondering, however whether the carnage left in it's wake was worth it? What has it achieved? Ireland remains in the grip of C v P, Hitler the abomination, Muslim extremeists, sects who's ideology is to promote the fantasies of sick and perverted pedophiles, the list goes on. Conversely, the core values of most religions is very simple. Believe in a loving entity who promotes the sanctity of human life. Perhaps it's not religion that is the problem, it is our collective need to extort and corrupt even the most innocent and purest of ideologies. The Human condition, to thine own self be true, as long as you rape, pillage & deconstruct the essence of mankind and replace it with fear, hate and judgment.

Like the cardinals go into an enclave until they select a new pope... how wonderful it would be to have all the STD and HIV tested guys and gals in an enclave too. Somewhere like Club Med. Yes Trish one does wonder how much money donated goes to a good cause... There was a media story the other day about one group that only gave a pittance of the hundreds of thousands collected to the needy... more than 90% went to so called administration each year. One year less than $400 went to the target people. Wish I could locate the story to quote the details... Church schools and aged homes are now run as a big business... many of the wealthy private schools are of a church origin, which only the elite can afford... though I understand the Catholic schools are more affordable.
