Aside from the blatant discrimination this person is displaying, which they should know as an employer or agency is well out of line, there is a whole world of wrong in this. I've never lived in a country town where half the population didn't have an accent of some sort! Well, they all had accents but only half were local drawls ;p Smile sweetly, tell them they can give you ellocution lessons as a part of your training and induction, or you'll see them in court for discrimination, hehe.

Note to self; learn to type, or at least spellcheck when using big words. Grrr.

I have an accent and have lived and worked in small country towns in NSW for the past 25 years. I have no trouble ever finding work. It is interesting picking up different accents, finding where people come from and I find it gives more to start a conversation about. I doubt if an accent was the reason for you not acquiring work at all. Most small country towns are very "clicky". Many of the people are so related to each other that the gene pool is low. They know everyone in the area. They went to school together, thier grandparents went to school together and unless you are in the loop are unlikely to get a look in for employment unless you have skills that are in great demand for that area. Get involved in the community, do things like the amateur musical society, show society, go read to the kindy kids, visit the oldfolks home, join the ladies tennis club. The more you fit in and get to know people, the greater your chances of successful living in a small town. Even then you will still not be considered as a local for maybe thirty years. If all else fails, have a good look around and think about making your own job. What skills do you have that you can utilise? What areas of business are under developed in that town?

i love the way you speak. You have a bit of an accent but it only makes you sound cuter. And as someone who has the mother of all accents, Deep scottish for those of you who don't know, I can honestly say that i have never had any issues with this and if they are discriminating over this then i think that you should consider legal action. But if worse comes to worse. i'll hire you. you can cook all my japanese food lol.love you sweet. miss you. take care.

I have an accent and moved to a small country town when I first came out here. I found the locals weren't used to hearing an accent so they would always ask me to repeat. After a while, when people see you they know to expect the accent and it gets better.I found that the accent made me stand out and actually helped with work. Also find that most girls seem to like it too - bonus :-)

My mother was brought up in Tasmania so I have her accent. I have been mistaken for British, South African and New Zealander and have been hired for my telephone voice in the past. I pronounce all consonants in a word, don't drop my g's, don't speak through my nose, I buy toothpaste in a "tewb" not a "chewb", my copy paper is "whhite not wite" and some things are important not impordend. My partner is a Kiwi and he laughs at the way I speak! I know I sound like a toffee nosed snob sometimes but I would rather that than sound like I was "brung up in the gudda"

Thanks all.. This comment did not come from an employer..just someone I know. Funny part is..he has an accent too! I have not a clue why he seems to think that my accent would be an issue, as I get enough attention around town as soon as I speak.. ..Or wear a pretty dress.. :P Fiona.. I am involved in the community events. I would prefer to go to the park n kick a footy or spar at Taekwondo or enjoying slamming myself against the wall sometimes in a squash court! lol...Ladies Tennis club? OMG.. The good old flying "r". It leaves the back of words like father, brother sister and mother, that's only half a word where I come from...but if you cook up a nice beef shtew and share, I won't be insulted. | Quoting 'MistressT'I know I sound like a toffee nosed snob sometimes but I would rather that than sound like I was "brung up in the gudda" | You know, MT...we all have a past and shouldn't deny it...and how in the hell did you get a Werther's suck up your nose? I hope you are able to remove it, and if you say "can't" be careful... | ...them's fighting words and don't call me that!

Australians have a different way of pronouncing words that end in "er" and "a" for instance -bugger is pronounced buggawater is pronounced wartawanker is pronounced wankaNow turn that aroundpasta is pronounced pasteromega is pronounced omegervagina is pronounced vaginerSome people with strong accents generally say them all as having an "a" on the end.More useless trivia from the Lady in leather

Quoting 'MrActive'can be quite dissuptuvve Laughed out loud at that one! . Personally, I love accents, the stronger the better! And as Stalky suggests, people who may misunderstand each other's speech can almost always find a common language to speak!

Although I've never found a kiwi accent to help me much - I'll have to disguise at as something else - In "a fish called Wanda" Italian and Russian were apparently a big turn on for Wanda....no harm in trying I guess:)MrA

When I was traveling I had not heard the Aussie accent for about a year and happened to bump into some Aussies and I was pretty shocked. Do we all sound like that? :( I love accents though, other accents can be so sexy.
