A young couple drive up to a bush cafe for lunch. The café has an alternative vibe. The cafe is popular with ‘back to landers’ who’re escaping the rat race by hiding away in the magical scenery and privacy of the Australian subtropical hills of Northern New South Wales. Despite the lush rainforest and gum trees, the landscape is parched and dry.

Anna excitedly replies, “Well it’s a sign! Come and join us tonight. I’m Italian and I love to cook.” Roberto slips a relaxed reply “Pick up some vino and we are even.” Jan looks at Mark excitedly “Sounds great to me! You guys are so kind!” Mark looks unsure “Err ok.”

The two couples listen to the music surrounded by an eclectic mix of intellectuals, hippies and families. Anna sips some wine and asks Roberto up for a dance. They are both dressed beautifully. Anna is wearing a fine tight fitting dark red dress. Roberto is wearing a tailored beige shirt and pants, smart but casual. Jan and Mark look at each other feeling very average with their jeans and t-shirts.

“You have an amazing place.” Mark says as he looks around.

Roberto invites them all to follow him. “Come and join us at the pool.”

The group walk further through a recently renovated modern addition to the house that opens to a light blue pool at the end. The white, sleek, modern outdoor area contrasts the dry farmlands and rich green subtropical bushland that it overlooks.

Mark looks stunned “Thank you so much for having us.”

The four sit on the outside lounge, next to the pool. Jan looks at Anna. “I know Roberto is in corporate, how about you Anna?”

“Well I have done a number of things,” starts Anna, “including bringing up children, a time in corporate and I’ve been a fitness instructor for the past 7 years.”

“Wow, no wonder you’re in such great shape,” Mark blurts out, looking slightly embarrassed when he realised he’d spoken his thoughts out loud.
