INTERVIEW:

(RedHotPie) You’re putting together one of the biggest alt-events WA has ever seen, the Taboo Ball… give us the blurb, what is it?

(OTK Daddy) The Taboo Ball is the largest alternative lifestyle events Perth has ever seen. It's part Fetish Ball, part Fantasy party, and part Electronic music festival. We've combined all of these elements to create an immersive night that celebrates the diversity of human sexuality, expression and identity. You can expect the best live performances of alt-electronic music, rubber fetish performance, latex fashion parades, live shibari bondage, flesh hook pull madness, gogo dancers, aerialists and heaps more. 6 hours of non-stop madness!

Run us through some of the acts appearing at Taboo Ball.

We are beyond excited to be bringing the world-famous Rubberdoll out to perform her incredible fetish show for the very first time in Australia! This is her Australian debut and her first time to the country, so we are absolutely pumped to be able to bring her out for the Taboo Ball. Her incredible Rubber Robot set has to be seen to be believed - lasers and latex and leds and cannons and heaps more. If you haven't watched it yet, see the promo video for sneak peeks, I don't want to give it all away but this is incredible stuff you have to see to believe.

Headlining our electronic music lineup is the amazing Amelia Arsenic who is ex-frontperson from top alt-rock band AngelSpit out of Sydney. She has been incredibly busy promoting her new album Carbon Black through her recent US tour performing live with some of the top names in the industry. I was able to talk to her and convince her to come out to Perth to perform a very rare DJ set for us - you do not typically get to hear the music and styles that influence Amelia like this, so we are super excited to hear her play.

Also coming in from Sydney - in fact directly from their New York performance - are world-renowned Shibari performance artists Mark and Lani Deviate. They have performed for the Tokyo Fetish Ball among many others, and recently helped form the Studio Kink group in Sydney which most people will be familiar with. They are in huge demand as performers and educators and we are lucky to be able to bring them to Perth for their first time also. Peer Rope Perth are also running workshops with Mark and Lani for those wanting to learn some of the more advanced shibari techniques.

We also have the latest latex fashion designs for the talented Suzi Homewrecker who has been designing all the Club Freak latex for us for the past 4 years! Jade's designs have graced the stunning bodies of Masuimi Max and many local and international models, so we cant wait to see her latest collection. Also debuting their very first runway show is the killer-talent of Rubber Bunny Latex who most will know as Warped Photography. Warped has been an avid collector and creator of latex for many years and his photography has been in the world's most famous fetish magazines, so this is the culmination of a lifelong fetish dedication. We are very lucky to be able to bring this to the Perth public.

Circus Carnis are coming to perform their special brand of Freakshow for us including flesh pulls, performance and stunning latex by Suzi Homewrecker. The Princess of Pain and the Reverend Butcher are huge crowd favourites and have performed multiple sellout seasons for Fringe Festival both in Perth and Adelaide and Melbourne. Seeing these guys perform is not for the faint hearted, these guys bring the extreme to the party.

Our resident DJs Liam and Jess Kill will be on the decks bringing the best in EBM, electro, synthpop, futurepop, aggrotech and industrial to keep the dark beats pumping. Joining us for the first time is Rhetoric front man DJ Amnesia who specializes in synthwave and new retro electronic music. DJ Amnesia is the man behind RTRFMs Revolver and has been playing in the alt clubs of Perth for almost 20 years! This is the cutting edge in electronic music right now and we cant wait for his sets.

On the stage will also be various cage dancers, aerialists, and performers to keep the energy high and the crowd jumping. Keep an eye out for random shibari performances by Peer Rope throughout the venue as well as the stunning visual presence of some of our advanced fetishists. As always we expect their space to be respected.

Team Freak will be in attendance on both floors to help with any questions or be the first port of call if anyone feels unsafe for any reason. They are easily recognizable by their green lanyards and are lifestyle kinksters from the local community that are very warm and can be approached at any time.

Who is the event aimed at?

We created the Ball to cross over between music, sexuality and lifestyle so anyone that identifies as kinky, alternative or open minded will feel like they have come home. There is a fetish play space and exclusive Fetish Lounge upstairs for the more hardcore fetishists and lifestylers, and a massive dancefloor with 2 bars downstairs where the emphasis is on the fantasy dance party and being right in the action. Between the alt-electro music and the overall atmosphere we aim to create an event that connects with everyone from first-timers to the seasoned and hardcore lifestyle players.

You have a long history in the WA kink and fetish scene, tell us a bit about your own brand, Club Freak.

Club Freak was created to fill a need in the fetish community to have a public event that specifically focused on creating a safe space for kinksters to play and connect. We are not a dungeon or a private party, instead we exist to bridge the gap between the curious public and the experience lifestyle kinksters. It can be daunting for first time adventurers to step into a professional dungeon for example, or to go to a private party let alone even get invited to one. Unlike other clubs our focus has always been on the music as a key element, and I bring the influence of the LA clubs I came out in when I was in California. The end result is a deep and welcoming space for a wide range of alternative people.

How did you get into the alt scene initially, and what was the landscape like then?

I got into it when I was living in Los Angeles in about 2005. A lot of my friends were involved in the local club scene as well as a number of private dungeons, so I would go and hang out with them. The first time I played it was like a homecoming - something in me just clicked and I knew I was where I belonged. BDSM has given me answers to questions and fears about myself I didn't even know I had, much less been able to articulate. It was a huge life change for me. At the time there were fetish-specific dance clubs like Dungeon and industrial music clubs like Perversion and Das Bunker as well as cross-over clubs like Bar Sinister which was a bar behind a restaurant with a dance floor and a dungeon on a mezzanine. I spent a lot of time in those clubs and from there got invited to dungeon play parties at Passive Arts and from there to private parties. So I guess I am creating that transition process here with Club Freak and hoping to give others the chance to have that life-changing moment too.

How have sites like RedHotPie impacted and evolved the alt lifestyle?

Online dating sites like RedHotPie have had a huge impact on the alt-dating scene. We have never had somewhere to go where people publicly vouch for each other, and where you can connect to anyone in any State. Being able to reach out to like-minded individuals online is very often the first step people will make when they begin to suspect there is something more to their life that is missing. Being able to do that safely and securely from inside your own safety zone is incredibly important.

You’re working toward a kink-based space in Perth for the alt community, tell us about that project.

The one thing we have struggled with as a Club has been not having our own permanent space. Although we have been very fortunate to have the support of the venues we have worked with, there are limits to what can be done on a part-time basis. Perth really needs a space that the alt-lifestyle people can call their own. Somewhere permanent where the music, culture and traditions can be passed down, somewhere anyone can access publicly, somewhere classes and workshops can be held and where community connections can be made - friendships, relationships etc. So we are in the process of identifying venues in the city where we can create this kind of environment without creating a professional dungeon. A social/educational/recreational space if you like. The process of setting this all up legally is a challenge but we have a great team and a strong Board of Advisers to oversee the project.

Final sell, why should people get along to the Taboo Ball, and where can they get tickets?

EVERYONE should come to the Ball because it is our night to celebrate our lifestyles, our sexualities and our non-conformity! A wonderful chance to get deep into the night, let loose your daytime vanilla existence and celebrate the unique beast you are underneath. There wont be another chance like this again for a long time, so make the most of it and come party with the rest of us!
