Sydney Fetish Ball - Let Your Freak Flag Fly!

Calling all rubber-clad Mistresses, human ponies and pets, leather lovers, slaves, sissies, submissives, sirs, servants and those who are curiously keen to explore what lies beyond the vanilla.

Hold onto your suspenders and zip up your latex catsuit because Sydney's BDSM scene has a new addition – the brand spanking new 2019 Sydney Fetish Ball.

I spoke to the kinky creators behind the 2019 Sydney Fetish Ball – independent Mistress Miss Penelope Dreadful and the team at Red Heaven ahead of the August event to find out what perverted punters and curious couples could expect.

What inspired the kinky collaboration between Red Heaven and Miss Penelope Dreadful?

MPD: I've been running social events, skill-shares, and femdom play parties for several years – the Sydney FemDoms & subs Munch; The Drum peer impact play skill share and Domina Parties Australia -– but I haven't put together a large scale event like Sydney Fetish Ball before. Michael (from Red Heaven) and I had been talking about the idea of a fetish event for Sydney over the past year or so. This year I had more time on my hands, so we decided to give it a go.

RH: Our last kinky party, 50 Shades of Red, was back in 2017. It’s about time for us to re-engage with the kinky side of our regular party-goers – plenty of Red Heaven guests are well in touch with their sense of Fetish. We love to celebrate the diverse beauty of our patrons in all their forms. Red Heaven Events exist to bring folks together – we cannot wait to bring you this scintillating opportunity at Sydney Fetish Ball!

Sydney has lots of kinky events, but is this the first fetish ball?

RH/MPD: Sydney has enjoyed different iterations of events falling under the name "Fetish Ball", which were organised by different community-centric groups over the years. The last Sydney Fetish Ball was held in 2010. After nine years, we felt it was time to dust it off and relaunch a new and improved Sydney Fetish Ball!

What was the impetus for gifting Sydney with a new kink party?

MPD: I travel – a lot – for my work, and I love going to the different events that make up the alternative scenes in the cities that I visit. These events all deliver a concentrated taste of their local community. I realised that it had been some years since I had attended a large-scale fetish party in Sydney and figured that it was high time I stopped hoping and wishing and just made it happen. I am really hoping to work with the Red Heaven team to put together one hell of a night and give people something to look forward to for next year.

RH: In the past, Red Heaven has presented various Fetish orientated events. Sydney Fetish Ball is our latest and largest extension of our portfolio of community-focused kinky parties. We couldn’t be more excited to continue our business ethic of showcasing astounding local talent to our like-minded patrons – and of course, who could turn down an opportunity to work with the lovely (and deliciously formidable) Miss Penelope Dreadful.

What is the format of the Fetish Ball?

RH: Upon your arrival our friendly door staff with greet you and have your extra layers checked into our secure cloakroom so that you can proceed down the red carpet in style. Our professional photographers will document your astounding outfits – but don’t worry! If you’d prefer not to be photographed you need only say so. The privacy and wishes of our guests are of utmost importance to us. After that, the bar awaits you! Our wonderful venue, Universal, has proven itself to be consistently Queer and Kink-friendly – a foremost consideration we faced when making the big decision of where the home of Fetish was to be. Their multi-award-winning bar and staff made the decision that much more effortless. Of course, the centrepiece of the evening will be an array of runway presentations by local Fetish inspired fashion designers. We’ve seen Fetish aesthetics splashed across magazine covers and mainstream catwalks over recent history. We’re bringing innovative Fetish haute couture back to its roots: the home-grown, creative, kinky community that has thrived as a subculture through grassroots nightlife.

What can party-goers expect?

RH: Expect unapologetic glamour and creativity, lust-inspiring fashion, jaw-dropping performances, amazing people, sultry and energising music, and above all, something you’ve never seen before.

What acts have you got planned?

MPD: We are excited to announce Mistress Tokyo and Paloma Negra Theatre will be opening the festivities with their renowned joint performance entitled ‘Sado’. This hasn't been performed yet in Sydney and it will really set the tone for the evening. You can also expect to see Australia's Danger Barbie, Diesel Darling, with a high-octane performance sure to get everyone warmed up.

RH: Your Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening will be none other than the beautiful, sassy (and very flexible) Suzie Q! She’s an acrobat, pole dancer, teacher, published author, ambassador for X-Pole Australia and creator of Pole Candy. Big achievements and a big personality to match – Suzie is sure to lead us through the dégustation that is Sydney Fetish Ball with a flavour that is uniquely her own. Your soundtrack for the night will be conducted by Red Heaven family – DJ Issy, back by popular demand until midnight, followed by the first lady of house herself, Kate Monroe, until the wee hours of the morning. Roving and podium fire performers will also be stimulating your senses between catwalk presentations to keep you hot and ready for the banquet of beauty and art we’ve planned for you!

Any international acts?

RH/MPD: We wanted to take the opportunity to put the spotlight squarely on local performers and the creativity of our community. The fallout of the lockout laws has kicked queer and creative arenas in particular square in the gut. Given that we have this opportunity, we'd rather use it to uplift local talent.

What makes this ball different to other BDSM events in Sydney?

RH: Red Heaven is renowned for our unique ambiance, a culmination of our hand-selected resident DJs, local performers and venues that reflect our values, including consensual frisky fun, inclusiveness and self-expression through themed costume parties in a night club environment. This distinctive atmosphere, collaborated with the personal flavour of Miss Penelope Dreadful, is sure to produce a night to remember. Additionally, we are teaming up with an institutional pillar of Sydney’s kinky community – Studio Kink Sydney. The Studio Kink team will be running your Play Zone throughout the Sydney Fetish Ball, where you can watch, learn, experience and discover in a safe and creative space.

MPD: Sydney has some incredible events on a regular basis. However many have been closed, either run out of business due to biased lawmaking or lacking a new promoter to carry the torch, as in the cases of Inquisition Leather Ball, Rubber Ball and the Under the Blue Moon Festival. I want Sydney Fetish Ball to become an iconic annual event that brings our kinky community together and makes space to celebrate our love and the fun of fetish with our incredible array of local designers and talent.

What do you both personally love about fetish and BDSM?

MPD: I love the creativity in expression, whether it is personal, shared, or a community identity.

RH: Exactly. People can fetishise almost anything you could imagine. It is the ultimate measure of human creativity and imagination. Be it a texture, sound, situation or act; fetishes are as diverse as we are. One premise that is venerated in the kink community is respect for each others’ fetishes, within the bounds of consent. BDSM practitioners have a highly developed understanding of consent due to the subculture’s consistent encouragement of open and non-judgemental discourse. Red Heaven’s mission statement is to uphold these values in every event we produce. That’s why we are so very proud of our first ever Sydney Fetish Ball.

How do you think Sydney ranks in the fetish in terms of BDSM happenings around the world?

RH/MPD: We have some of the most dedicated kinksters anywhere, and we will always need more events and social opportunities for them to enjoy. Over the years we've lost a number of venues and events and this has an impact on the way that our community is being shaped. We are excited to be putting our best efforts forward to create more opportunities for us to celebrate together in Kink-friendly spaces.

Your personal preference... leather or latex?

MPD: Yes. Both. And extreme shoes. Layered with mesh and hosiery. I love the smell and taste and texture, the caress - it's a decadent sensory overload, sex for my whole body.

RH: Michael prefers leather. Amy can’t choose!
