Long Shot - Film Review (Plus WIN Tickets!)

Long Shot tells the story of Fred Flarsky, (Seth Rogan) a gifted and free-spirited journalist who has a knack for getting into trouble. Enter Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), one of the most influential women in the world -- a smart, sophisticated and accomplished politician. When Fred unexpectedly runs into Charlotte, he soon realizes that she was his former baby sitter and childhood crush. When Charlotte decides to make a run for the presidency, she impulsively hires Fred as her speechwriter -- much to the dismay of her trusted advisers.

Now I gotta admit, after watching the trailer I was super skeptical about the chemistry between Theron and Rogen, because - let's face it - in terms of punching above his weight, it's like pitting him against Muhammad Ali. I was also skeptical about Theron's comedic chops holding up next to powerhouse comedic veteran Rogen.

Well, Theron definitely holds her own next to Rogen. In fact she was the instigator of many laugh-out-loud moments. She's not just an unfairly attractive 'hot chick' stereotype, she's also a great actress and it was wonderful to see her range in this film. It's very much a familiar role for Rogen - he brings his usual crass, cringe-worthy and outrageous brand of humour to the character, Fred Flarsky. Rogen gives a surprisingly heart-warming performance as the underdog that you just can't help but root for, despite how annoying and irresponsible he is.

Long Shot also attempts to stretch itself in the genre, as a romantic comedy with both heart and brains, tackling some serious social and political issues that could have killed the vibe, but it does so in a non-preachy, entertaining way. While there's not really any surprises along the way in the pretty formulaic 'nerdy boy lusts after hot girl' plot, there are more than enough belly laughs, a great supporting cast and an undeniable chemistry between Rogen and Theron to make it a super enjoyable couple of hours.

Long Shot hits cinemas nationwide on May 2nd.
