I read in the news today,.....

May 25 2012

This thread has the potential to go forever as, every day, there will be new topics to discuss. Today I read that an Indonesian High Court Judge is questioning the President's decision to cut Schapelle Corby's sentence. In his view, drug crimes are worse than terrorism or corruption. ...YYeahhh rrriiight.... There's a woman in the U.S. who married herself in a commitment ceremony. I'm thinking the word 'commitment' should have an added meaning there, me thinks. Nine has a poll asking whether people who were bullies in school should be refused jobs. If they are not employed, that means the rest of us will be paying for them to become dole bludgers so I'm not in favour of that idea. What says the rest of you?

I am glad I stopped watching tv moths ago. I found the news is often bullshit on a stick at times. comming to greece two days ago, the news was riots in Petras where my boat was to dock my thinking shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit got there nuttin, blueskys, warm days friendly people Greece looks pretty good to me, Italy looks more like a basket case I mean the mafia owns Naples, apparently gangsters do not know how to do a rubbish run! and if you pay cash to some guy in Pompeii he takes you to all the restricted zones. yeah people were pretty hot little fuckers in old Pompeii, bit like RHP.

    1. The concept (in part). I was only thinking yesterday there are so many interesting things to comment on at the moment! Politics and religion be damned, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Craig Thomson with the story's salacious and tantalising combo of brothels, conspiracy theories and tragic hilarity. I know Gina Rinehart is not a name that would normally come to mind when you're thinking about sexytimes, and in fact might have quite the cold shower effect, but for $29 billion, well... just think of all the potential mining puns. Clive Palmer though... not for all the luxury liners in the world!   My complaint: don't hide this stuff in just one thread! Things get lost and buried that way, and I usually lose interest with threads after about page 4. Start new topics if there's something interesting to discuss!   2. The news that Tuscan Red is taking the Mediterranean by storm, single-handedly saving the Italian and Greek economy with her lifestyle of champagne, cruiseships, and all the sun-kissed lovers a beach girl could dream of!

Yes dumb idea, Kids don't think five minutes ahead, of the consequences of their actions...then again I think there is the odd few adults whom are just as guilty. As for dole bludger's (well maybe that's to harsh a word), I'm sure their are lots of people genuinely looking who can't find work, lets not tar everyone with the same brush. Schapelle Corby...It's hard enough to believe anyone could be so utterly stupid to do what she was found guilty of.My own personal feeling is that if you travel to countries, with these twisted laws, and extreme punishments then you kinda have no one to blame but yourself, so no, little sympathy for her or anyone else caught up in those legal system. We live in the best goddamn country in the world, and as Angry used to say, when he is out front of the Tatt's (Rose Tattoo)"you're standing in it"Cheers Felonius

of the news Mistress Tv news I rarely ever see, and if I do, only watch the abc news, or the 7.30 report, 4 corners and Q&A, Lateline and business Lateline, as well as ABC news 24.I get most of my news from the print media (online) and Radio, principally smh & The Land, and ABC local radio, for both news and the country hour.Generally whenever I'm online I will have SMH open on one tab and Rhp on another, plus whatever else.I know lot's of people take the ostrich approach to life, the ones who scare me most watch aca and the like and believe it!Is misinformed better than uninformed...lol....who knows! Each to their own.Cheers Felonius

But pay TV news like the BBC or CNN or at times SBS who appear to give more detail coverage of world events...especially politically and financially and when I do watch Im damn glad I live here (as Felonious and Angry said this is a awesome country) and not for instance, the Middle East.   Being American I find watching the local news in Perth frustrating...their only interest is the reporting of Gina Rinehart spiralling (upwards) wealth or the local bloody Derby (who cares ??????-true footy happens in Melbourne - even I know that ) !!!   Perth/WA news tends to be very insular in their reporting...     My brother is a Marine and his off fighting somewhere in Afghanistan...( I haven't heard from him in several months ). Its his third tour of duty and after this hopefully he will be going home or even moving to Darwin which would thrill me no end. We are still a country (Australia) officially at war, but you hear very little, uinless sadly if a Australian solider is hurt/injured (god forbid) ....each day I jump online and scan the American news channels and papers to find out what is actually going on over there..alway a little apprehensive, wondering if my bro is ok...mmmmm   On a liter note, Tuscan Red my friend ...why are you sending me messages and posting on forums ???....your on the way to Mykonos god damn you ..and all those eager Greek toys boys at your beck and call... - we all should be the last thing on your mind !!!!....Travel safe and you know what to bring me back from your Grand Tour...xxx

We are bombarded everyday with wars, abuse, injustice, bombings, massacres etc, to the extent that many of us feel completely powerless and overwhelmed by what is happening in the world . I have always loved the slogan'THINK GLOBALLY,ACT LOCALLY'.While maybe we can't change a lot,we can certainly make a difference,by for example, volunteering, joining Get Up,or other lobby groups for social change. Even just becoming aware of what is happening in our local communities, neighbourhoods, and schools, can make a difference to how we view our place in the world. Most of us lead priviledged lives in this country but there are many who don't. While many people are time poor, families, work, consume most of our time, there is always something we can do to make a difference. The Dalai Lama once said'The interest of others, is the best form of self interest'...I believe he might be onto something. x Hugs H

The brain is still growing during adolescence and the higher order thinking skills don't actually develop until later adolescence in most children. You actually stop maturing in your mid-20's. So to delay punishment for bullying is really about the stupidest idea anyone has come up with lately. They should really have consulted say... a psychologist before instigating a trial. There is no way this will work as the brain structures that allow for such punishment to have effect haven't even formed in most of the kids it will affect. - M

I tried 400 lbs and had lots of hits, some as young as seven. My own son hit 75kg when he was eight so I started walking him to and from school and got him back down to 65kg but this was at the time that my first marriage was breaking down. When I left, his mother was so determined to be the favoite that she spoiled him an let him do or have what ever he wanted. Within a year, he had ballooned out to 85kg an nothing I could do or say made any dierence. He's now 19 yrs and 140kg and suffers from celiac disease. He has finally forgiven me for leaving his mother and we are starting to make headway. He still spens too much time infront of the computer but he's now sticking to his diet and getting some light exercise. A one hundred and forty kilo teenager is huge. That's 309 lb. Four hundred pounds in a child is mind boggling and heart breaking.

"Somebody needs a new wingman. Police in South Carolina arrested Calvin Bernard Hill on Sunday after the 54-year-old allegedly stabbed his friend during a disagreement over which man "can have more sex," according to a Greenwood police report. Following a night of partying, Hill and his friend were riding in the back seat of a PT Cruiser when the argument began, police said. The victim -- a 32-year-old male whose name is redacted from police documents -- told authorities that "he and Mr. Hill got into a verbal altercation" about who is more capable with the ladies. That argument led to a "tussling match" and soon escalated to the alleged stabbing..." - Huffingtonpost 10th May 2012

I was a bit surprised at how much detail the article went into, but maybe it needed some detail to drive home graphically how bad this is for those that have been in that situation. But what a pile of poop the aftermath has turned into. I hope the laws get cleared up from this.

I thought one of the article click bait headers was interesting though "if it's not an enthusiastic "Yes", then it's a no" - I ponder to myself - why would anyone want to continue with someone if it's not an enthusiastic yes anyway? How can it be enjoyable if the other person isn't into it? Anyway, lots of eye-openers and things to ponder from that read today...

I read that the Mormon Church is severing all ties with the Boy Scouts of America.
Joining the Boy Scouts is practically automatic among Mormon boys, and ends a 100yrs of tradition.

The Morman's dislike that the Boy Scouts have allowed gay troop leaders, and announced plans to allow girls to join their ranks, insisting on separate youth programs for boys and girls.
Being a conservative faith, i guess they are opposed to gay marriage, and co-education teachings, etc.
But seriously, what a better way to learn to tie rope. It would be my first badge.

I would have thought we've moved on by now. Morman boys represent 18.5% out of the 2.3m youth in the Boys scouts.
Sometimes i think Church's have a lot to answer for.

I read an article about that episode of 4corners on Monday morning on the ABC News website. From memory there was a disclaimer at the top of the article, always good to see these days, when there is difficult information following and components that might be a trigger for some people. It was quite a comprehensive article, especially once we'd watched the episode in question, that night. I'd also like to point out that it was very well presented online. Some of the techniques used were not ones I've typically seen used with news articles. This included well embedded photos and video. As pointed out in the 4corners episode, there were some problems with the second trial. Surely, in 2018, we as a society, especially after last year, can have a mature discussion regarding consent and make sure laws cover as many aspects of this area as possible. All too often we hear of people not feeling comfortable coming forward, no doubt in part due to the process that will ensue, as well as those cases that never make it to trial, and those where poor procedural process, limited evidence, an intimidating judicial process, and negative outcomes for complainants in the past, lessen probability for action or redress. We also have to teach our children and the youth of Australia, what constitutes consent. Perhaps a public information campaign targeting older Australians, thirties and over, about consent, about where the law stands and possible ramifications. Your body is yours. Never feel you have to compromise that position. Develop confidence to say no. Understand consent. Understand what constitutes NO. Don't pressure someone once they have made you aware of their feelings, in the hope of changing their mind. Tell someone if you have found yourself in a situation that goes against your wishes. There are people who will listen. And remember, speaking up, might well save someone else. Enjoy consensual sex, it can be a marvellous thing. Sites like this are helping broaden people's attitude to sex and relationships. Discussion always helps. Mr. urn. .

I did read in the news today a woman did have her partners sperm frozen after he did suicide and did win a court decision today in queensland that she can use it to artificially inseminate herself as the court classed his sperm as property.
What the hell does this mean?
Should males now be required to expressly forbid desecration of our corpse in our will so that our sperm doesn't become "property" after our deaths?
Who thinks to harvest tadpoles immediately after their loved one tragically passes?
(must be done with in 24 hours)
I find this whole thing really disturbing on many levels and am concerned for the precedent and greater legal implications.
    Just my opinion.

    I question the precedent myself.
I understand the woman won the case based on the information by friends and family that the man had often talked with the woman about having children with her before his suicide.
It's not a new thing for women to use their departed partner's sperm to have children but usually the sperm has been frozen prior to passing and death is accidental.
So, this is a very different beast for me in a few ways and there are multiple questions that include his state of mind and the finality of the choice he made in the end.

Yesterday, Thursday, I saw all of these headlines on the channel nine news site. Please don't draw any inference from these headlines regarding a discussion in another thread this week. This was purely my observation yesterday. I have had a considerable interest in the news all my life, have even worked in news gathering and on-air discussion. .. "Schoolgirl violently attacked as students stand and film...".. "Perth father guilty of stabbing murder of his son...".. "Woman murdered mum-of-four so she could raise her children...".. "Queensland woman uneasy after finding rusted knife in yard Chilled to the bone when she finds out how grandson used it to end sexual abuse.".. "Mum drove to the beach to dump son's body with other child in car...".. "Girl 12, kills herself an hour after meeting principal Mum reveals bullies' taunts and sues US school.".. "Facebook must explain dead man's deleted profile...".. "Hollywood rich kid jailed for brutal killing of model girlfriend...".. "Man, 21, pleads guilty to violent bashing of Perth grandmother...".. "Millionaire property developer Ron Medich jailed for 39 years...".. "Sydney woman charged with abusing seven-week-old baby...".. "Sydney's rainbow crossing returns..." .. I like the last one. .. And if you are feeling it necessary, remember, you can call a helpline, like lifeline, Beyond Blue, and others, or even go straight to the Emergency Department at your local hospital. .. Mr. urn. .

"Crying Honduran girl in photo at US-Mexican border not separated from mother." This is from the Australian ABC news website today, Saturday. It brings to light that the TIME magazine cover this week, which had President Trump standing tall over a small crying girl, published in order to draw attention to the separation of children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexican border, depicted a crying girl, who was not separated from her mother. The separation of these family members from eachother, was a very real problem, it surprises me that with all the real photo opportunities, the Getty photographer and TIME magazine, chose this image, then placed Trump into it. The world was outraged at what was happening, there were lots of real situations to photograph and real stories to tell. It kind of helps the people you don't have on side and their flimsy arguments when you choose this path, remember, those opposed to the policy, don't need converting. The girl's father said her mother took her, without his knowledge, and border authorities said the mother had tried to cross before and had previously been deported. The girl was photographed crying as she watched her mother being searched. Both her and her daughter were taken, together, to a facility. More than 2000 children were separated from their parents. I saw the news about Sydney's rainbow crossing the other day Mr. urn,
I read the photographer's explanation of how he knew this was an important photo And saw that explanation about the heart breaking vision of the crying girl too. I'm glad to hear the decision about the separation was reversed.
I have an interest in how we are manipulated by the news and advertising. From the choice of what they show us to the spin they put on it. In particular I think of 2 online magazine articles, using the same photos, by the same magazine from very different points of view at extreme points of the suitability of wearing the skin tight outfit she had on while pregnant.

This today, Sunday, from the channel nine news site. "Serena Williams speaks out about domestic violence Tennis star's radical idea could save lives" Upon clicking on the story, the secondary headline was as follows, "Serena Williams advocates for young boys to be educated about domestic violence". The story begins by saying that although the focus is often on women, that Serena and "many" believe "that's the wrong way to achieve progress." Giving a speech at anti-domestic violence charity, Purple Purse, for which she is an ambassador, she spoke "about the need to educate men about the issue, from an early age." Serena said, "I think expanding the conversation to men and ...to young boys, it's so important. This is a human rights issue. We should all be treated the same. We should all be treated equal. With domestic abuse, it doesn't care what colour you are, what background you're from." The article said Associated Press reported June 20. The story continued, "Serena stressed the importance of changing the dialogue, particularly with young people, by teaching kids the fundamental pillars of respect, and the sad history of violence against women." Serena Williams went on to say, "It's important to get the message out there--to our young men, to our boys, to our daughters---to let that new generation now, know that, Let's stop this. Let's change this. Let's create a better us,". Revealing she has become an even stronger advocate for Women's rights, now that she has a daughter. Certainly thought provoking and worthy of action. Why didn't I think of that, this last fortnight, oh, hang on, that's right...Thumbs up to Serena, an awesome woman of our time, actively supporting a very important cause. One we should all have an investment in. Mr. urn. .

I did read the story. Glad to see the support for women and the recognition of education for all but still not seeing the recognition for the need for societal change that recognises women really aren't always victims, and how often it is easy for them to be the perpetrator under the guise of the victim.

I've seen a friend evicted from a share house because they tried to support the male of the house after living there for months and seeing the true situation over time.

Yeah, so the male friend who objected was evicted while away overnight just after paying their board. Their items were packed up for collection with a decent amount missing. Only one story but stats would have the husband in the negative.

So both sides of the domestic situation have to be considered.

Let's empower each and every one of our children and teach them how worthy they are while educating them how much we have in common rather than just focusing on our differences.

If I had any idea what it is you're objecting to, I could have a reply to address your concerns.
I don't believe I have a failure in my perspective that deserves your response though I respect your right to have it. I suspect the difference is that I want to see beyond women's rights (which are vital) and include men's rights (which are also vital)? Equality.
And that, most importantly, children's rights, that's where we begin building each other up recognising how different things are now in the world that we're not just man and woman with the old societal expectations any more but so much more including transgender being recognised etc.
Human rights is my thing considering so many of us are victims of societal expectations in so many ways. We end up feeling like failures and not good enough.

Peachy., I was referring to what "smilingwithfun" wrote, note, his profile age is 58. Thought all that would have been clear, as your profile age is 54. I was thanking you for noting my post and reading my recent comments correctly. Which is amusing, now you have misread the one above yours, I guess. I was thankful of your recent support. We haven't always seen eye to eye. I was saying bye, as I'm a bit over people misreading comments and gaslighting, a term developed from the film, Gaslight. That is, people who attempt to make you believe things you have said or done are not the reality. They attempt to portray an alternate version to destabilize. There have been numerous comments of mine and others recently, which where followed by comments that strove to present a different representation from the intended meaning of the original comments. Some also chose to argue upon detail I agreed with. You may also have encountered this recently. My point being, I've grown tired of that behaviour. It's vain, and self serving. As I have mentioned in the past, I grew up with a couple of the biggest egos in the country, so, I don't suffer egos any longer, I just bow out. Now, just to be clear Peachy., I had No issue on this subject with you, whatsoever. I even noted your long held balanced approach, when that was questioned. And yes, children's rights are indeed important, they have been too often forgotten in the past and I even referred to dv that involved me as a child, in another thread. The issue, as I have maintained throughout recent discussion, is a societal issue. We all have roles to play. Mr. urn. .

This is a picture of my daughter the night before her Dad took his own life. 4-years old and her first night of ballet class. Full of joy. Full of innocence. The worst thing that had ever happened to her was dropping her ice cream cone at the county fair. The next day her Dad waved goodbye to her as we drove off to our play date and then he got in his car and went and shot himself on my Grandpa's land.I had to sit on her little bed with her and her fuzzy stuffed animals and baby dolls and I had to tell my 4-year old that her Dad had died. She stared at me and then said, "Mama? What does die mean?" It took days, weeks for her to fully understand.......even after she seen him in his coffin.....that he was not ever coming home and that's what die means. If you are having suicidal thoughts and you have children? Your children will not be better off without you. Your kids need you. Your death will take away some of their innocence. They will have nightmares. They will wake up sweating and screaming. Look at their photo and figure out a way to keep yourself alive on this earth. Don't drop a load of pain, guilt, abandonment, trauma, and grief on their shoulders. They are so little. They need you. Stay. If for nothing else.......if for no one else......stay for them. Find your fight and get yourself the help you deserve so that you can care for your children. This girl knows things other kids don't know. She knows how her Dad died. I told her the truth....not the gory and scary details.....but just the plain and simple truth that he hurt himself so that he would die. She knows what suicide is and openly says the word when most adults shy away from it.She also knows that he was a very loving, kind, and good person who made a very wrong choice. She knows that he was human, that he was sick, and that he was terrified and she has deep compassion for him because she too knows what it's like to be scared. She knows that he loved her to the moon and back a billion times and he still does.Telling her the truth opened up conversations about mental health, love, emotions, strength, grief, God, spirituality, and more. She doesn’t judge him or blame him.....only loves him.She forgives her Dad.She knows that he didn't leave because he didn't love her but because he had no fight left in him to stay. She misses him.......we all do.....every day. It’s a soul deep missing when a child loses a parent. She barely remembers him.She still loves him.......very, very much. She will grow up not knowing what it's like to have her very own Dad to protect her, laugh with her, care for her, and love her.If she grows up someday, gets married, and has children of her own? That will be the first time since she was 4 that she sees first hand in her own home what a Dad does.I look at this photo and my heart hurts so much for this little girl. This girl is now 7 and she is happy again. She is joyful, smart, kind-hearted, loving, adventerous, compassionate, and the bravest girl I have ever met in my entire life. So, you. The guy who is thinking of taking his life. The guy who is sitting at the dinner table right now with his kids and wife eating tacos and you're smiling and you're laughing but in your mind you are planning your own death for the next day?I'm asking you to stay.I'm asking you to tell your wife your plans.I'm asking you to close your eyes and remember being a little kid. Remember how much you loved and needed both of your parents.Fight for your life. You belong here on earth. You are worthy and so, so loved.Your family needs you.You belong here on a Tuesday night eating tacos with your kids and your wife laughing at inside jokes only a family understands. You deserve to watch your children grow up.You deserve their hugs and kisses and giggles. They need you.Maybe pleading with you to stay on this earth won't work. Maybe it's not enough.....maybe you'll still go. I don't know if spreading this love and pleading will work because I never got that chance to do that with my husband. But maybe it will help you. Maybe it will help just one of you and that's why my children and I share our story. So, you. Please stay.Yes, they will survive and move forward in their lives if you leave but they won't be better off without you. They will forever be missing a piece of themselves....a piece of their heart.

Touching story, thank you for sharing.I will admit, there have been times when it was only my sons that have kept me in this world.
Older and wiser now.. there is simply far to much to see and do to leave this place early.
Trouble is when you are in that place you just plain don't see it.

Norush66a, why can it not be possible those stats are correct? (or grossly under reported even).
Still always good to ask for sources of information.
It takes nothing away from you, from mens abuse of women either.
Just means there are shit people from both genders and it has to stop!

I heartily agree with your final statement.

Very sorry to hear your tale of your family member, I had abuse, but nothing like that, the fear though... then the anger.. takes years to get past it, some never do.

Funny enough I am very comfortable now with my own company, don't "Need" anybody.
Not bitter, not twisted, just fine with however it works out.. Life.

I've followed since they were first lost, celebrated when they were found, and now follow in horror that because they were forced to retreat so deeply in the caves as the water rose that they're 4 ks in. Apparently the boys can't swim which makes it impossible to give them a crash course in scuba diving that they're going to need to to get out of there because the ground is too unstable to drill down to them.
My heart is in my throat at how they must feel having myself spent mere minutes in the solid dark of a mine during a visit where I couldn't bring myself to climb the shaft the guys experienced. So I sat alone with no light at all and waited while they went. Scary shit, I have a lot of admiration for our miners.
My thoughts will be with these people as they go, Peachy
