Question. I often get people asking to be my friend as a first contact which I find a little odd. As a guest is there any purpose/benefit to adding people as friends? For eg. Does it make chatting easier etc? Not sure what the point is and don't want to accept a friend request to find out? Ideas?

In terms of function I believe it let's people know your bday and activity, such as forum comments, events you've signed up for, people you've rated as hot, if they're online or not, and maybe datefinder?

People use the profile friends very differently. Some people friend collect, some people use it as an initial point of contact, some use it as a bookmark, for some it's people they've met and considered as friends or acquaintances

Never

I get friend requests from men as a first contact and I instantly delete them, not interested in collecting friends and I think it's weird if I don't know them, do they use a long list of friends like a brag book?

Earthqueen:

I am 56.. as my profile suggests..

I have been on here since I was 50 :)

been a fully paid up member since then.. AND when I was on here as someone else PRIOR..

I had ONE friend for a month, and deleted that..

I do not see any value in friendships here.. but, some of those whom I chat to regularly, are on my FB friends list..

IT is absolutely no one else's business on here who I choose as a friend... in RL OR on RHP

Absolutely agree with cavey50

Op friends are personal and one's that you usually know and who you can count on one hand or two if lucky.🖐 🖐 It's true people will promote friend's in different ways, be it Facebook, rhp or other. Am of the same feeling that the one's who are close to me or have my details and know how to contact me if Intrested. 😎😊 Personally I don't add any friends on rhp for there privacy and wouldn't even if I met them. 😁

Friends vs Lists

Hi OP

If you want to keep tabs on what people do on here, you can add them to either hotlist or shortlist. You will see when the log in and any posts on forums they comment on/like as well as datefinder entry will show up on your screen.

As far as I know, Friends work the same way as the lists with the added bonus of you knowing that person's friends, and perhaps based on your level of trust, makes approaching someone easier. Perhaps the idea is that it is safer to approach a friend's friend than a total stranger. Shrugs.

I usually ask first before adding anyone as a friend. Some have said yes, some said no.

...

The only people on my friends list here are people I've actually met in person. Not complete strangers.
And despite my profile saying something along the lines of:
"I won't accept 'friend' requests from someone I've never spoken to or exchanged messages with, let alone met" ...
I still get friend requests from time to time from random strangers I've never messaged with or spoken to.
I don't think there's a specific point to adding friends, or having friends here on RHP. But it can possibly act as a verification to others that you ARE a real person.

Friends

As Pepper said, people use 'friends' on here in different ways. No right or wrong way, find what works for you.

All of the friends on my profile are people I know in real life, and are real friends who I communicate with outside of Pie.

I say in my profile that I wont accept requests from people I don't know, and still receive several friend requests a week from complete strangers. Depending on my mood, I either delete or block

Welcome, hope you enjoy the ride :)

May not serve a purpose

But one does not want to appear "friendless" around here nor appear to be a newbie.

Most of mine l have met. There are a couple of peeps l haven't but l notice I'm their no 1 friend and don't want to desert them. I'm too soft....

42 friends. Hope l don't appear to be a little "loose".....

My friends are simply like minded people I have "met" through the forums, we chat privately to have sensible conversations or pursue an interest without the white noise generated by the forums.

To me...

...the "Friends" function is of far less importance than it is in Facebook, for instance.

I have one friend here because she requested it, and i see it as a harmless request.

I've never requested "Friends" in my 3 odd years here but I HAVE friends...

As above

I know everyone on my friend list, yes get random unsolicited ones and I think that's inappropriate; I mean you don't go classing complete strangers in real life as friends do you? I think some people will vet your friends list to see who, if anyone; you have in common. Some people may decide to contact you based on that OR avoid you like the plague. People are strange......

Unlike Annie I'm not quite so loose, pelvic floor Annie; be good to your pelvic floor!! 😘 ~ Indy
